This weak; i am proud to be a woman

This week a new organisation launched called UK Feminista, aiming to encourage action against the inequalities between women and men.

I’ll be the first to admit, i am a shit feminist.

Yeah, i work and earn my own money but give up my Vivienne Westwood heels and burn my bra i wont! I am an unashamed victim of fashion and i don’t mind a good flirt but when i hear some of the frightening statistics that show just how far we are away from being equal, then i get really angry.

Here are some of the statistics;

  • Women do 2/3 of the world’s work, yet receive 10% of the world’s income, and own just 1% of the means of production
  • 100,000 women are raped each year in the UK, and the rape conviction rate is just 6.5%
  • Women working in the UK earn on average 23% less than men
  • Only 18.3% of of the world’s members of parliament are women (the UK figure is under 20%)

It is shocking that after more than 100 years of progress, we still seem so far away from equality. But what can i do? That’s where UK Feminista got me excited – finally an accessible, proactive forum for women to find out how they can do something, on whatever level they choose.

For those of us who do like a bit of lippy and a push up bra and as a result fear the wrath of ‘true’ feminists who think Elle magazine is the route of all evil, finally there is a place to get involved and not feel like a phoney. We are fighting the same war, who cares if i do it in this seasons super short floral playsuit?!

The Week and The Weak #1

As an introduction The Week and The Weak is a weekly (no, never?!) post about one thing I thought was brilliant this week and one this that was just weak.

For my first edition I’m all out geek. One of the best things I came across was the ad spot created by Sid Lee for Adidas’ new range of Star Wars trainers.

Have a butchers:

THE WEEK

However, the weak item for this week has to be the actual trainers. Below is a picture of the ‘Yoda Trainer’. And I am sorry to go all teenage social network slang on you but WTF?!

I mean, really, who the heck would wear them?

This Weak; i have been mostly adapting to single life

I split from a three year relationship last week, and in a spur of the moment decision I decided to accompany my two single housemates to speed dating. Yes, speed dating.

I have wanted to go for a long time and I even recall a conversation with said ex about how fun it would be and that we should go even though we aren’t single.

It was brilliant.

If you aren’t familiar about how it goes down; you sign up online, attend, see about 15 men for 4 minutes each, make notes and then the next day fill out an online form saying ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘friends’. If you match up with anyone then you get their email address and the rest is up to you.

The friends box I feel is a bit like a limp pat on the back; “Yeah we had a good chat, but I’m just not into bald men.”

The selection of men was wide and far reaching – I met an Australian, two Greek men, a Hungarian and an Scottish/American hybrid (I couldn’t work it out).

Four minutes is just about the right amount of time. It is short enough to mean that you can still fill the time with talking to someone, even if they are mental, but it also long enough to suss someone out.

The Hungarian was a researcher who used to work at Cambridge Uni. Is it the case that all academics are devoid of personality and a sense of humour? Maybe it takes up such a large part of the brain to be that intelligent that there is no room left to think about social skills?

I also encountered another strange soul, who upon hearing that I was a journalist said, “Oh, I did journalism at uni, but I didn’t finish the course.”

“Oh really, why was that?”

“Well I wanted to concentrate on other thing.”

“Oh ok, what was that?”

“Martial arts.”

It wasn’t all kung Fu though, my conversation with the one man I put a yes for revolved around ex girlfriends that happen to work for the same publisher as me and lemon curd being the best type of preserve, along side Cherry and not forgetting Nutella. He also said yes by the way.
