This weak; i am proud to be a woman

This week a new organisation launched called UK Feminista, aiming to encourage action against the inequalities between women and men.

I’ll be the first to admit, i am a shit feminist.

Yeah, i work and earn my own money but give up my Vivienne Westwood heels and burn my bra i wont! I am an unashamed victim of fashion and i don’t mind a good flirt but when i hear some of the frightening statistics that show just how far we are away from being equal, then i get really angry.

Here are some of the statistics;

  • Women do 2/3 of the world’s work, yet receive 10% of the world’s income, and own just 1% of the means of production
  • 100,000 women are raped each year in the UK, and the rape conviction rate is just 6.5%
  • Women working in the UKĀ earn on average 23% less than men
  • Only 18.3% of of the world’s members of parliament are women (the UKĀ figure is under 20%)

It is shocking that after more than 100 years of progress, we still seem so far away from equality. But what can i do? That’s where UK Feminista got me excited – finally an accessible, proactive forum for women to find out how they can do something, on whatever level they choose.

For those of us who do like a bit of lippy and a push up bra and as a result fear the wrath of ‘true’ feminists who think Elle magazine is the route of all evil, finally there is a place to get involved and not feel like a phoney. We are fighting the same war, who cares if i do it in this seasons super short floral playsuit?!

  1. I cannot say I was Gloria Steinem or Betty Friedan, but I am proud in making the progress I made. Fashion Guide
